Three mistakes that turn a notice into a risk
You usually have 30 days to reply to an audit notice. Miss the deadline and the tax officer can complete a best-judgment assessment — with interest and penalty stacked on top.

Common questions
Income tax return filing in Bangladesh
Who is required to submit an income tax return in Bangladesh?
Anyone who holds a TIN, or whose income exceeds the tax-free threshold, must submit a return. Filing is also mandatory for specific categories regardless of income — for example company directors, owners of a motor car, city-corporation residents who are members of a club, holders of a trade licence, and anyone applying for a bank loan, credit card, or certain government services that require a valid TIN certificate.
What is the tax-free income threshold for individuals?
For the 2025–26 tax year the general tax-free threshold is BDT 3,75,000 a year. Higher thresholds apply to women and senior citizens (65+), persons with disabilities, third-gender taxpayers, and gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters. We confirm your exact threshold and applicable slab rates when we review your income.
When is the income tax return submission deadline?
The statutory "Tax Day" under the Income Tax Act 2023 is normally 30 November following the end of the income year, but the NBR frequently issues public notices extending this date for individual taxpayers — sometimes more than once in a season. We track every NBR notice and tell you the current live deadline when you contact us, so you're never relying on outdated information.
Is online e-Return filing compulsory now?
Yes — the NBR has made online submission through the official e-Return portal (etaxnbr.gov.bd) mandatory for individual taxpayers in recent tax years, with limited paper-filing exceptions for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, non-resident Bangladeshis and a few other groups. We handle the full e-filing process for you either way.
What is a "zero return" and who needs one?
A zero return is filed by TIN holders whose income is below the taxable threshold. Many people are legally required to hold a TIN (for a bank account, trade licence, car registration, etc.) without having taxable income — a zero return keeps that TIN compliant and avoids penalty notices for non-filing.
What is minimum tax, and do I have to pay it even with no income?
Individuals located within a city corporation area generally owe a minimum tax once their income crosses the taxable threshold, even if slab-wise tax works out lower — for example BDT 5,000 in Dhaka North, Dhaka South and Chattogram City Corporations, BDT 4,000 in other city corporations, and BDT 3,000 elsewhere. First-time and certain low-income taxpayers may qualify for a reduced minimum tax.
What documents do I need to file my return?
Typically your e-TIN certificate, salary certificate or business income summary, bank statements, any TDS/AIT certificates, details of investments made for tax rebate, and a list of your assets and liabilities if a wealth statement (IT-10B) is required. We give you a personalised one-page checklist after the free review.
Can I revise a return after I've already submitted it?
Yes, in most cases. The Income Tax Act 2023 allows an amended or revised return to be filed within a specified window before your assessment is finalised, if you discover an omission or error in good faith. Once assessment proceedings are complete, correcting a mistake becomes harder and may require an appeal instead — so it's best to review the return carefully before the deadline.
What is advance tax and do I need to pay it?
If your tax liability in the last assessment crossed a set threshold, you may be required to pay advance tax in quarterly instalments during the year, rather than a single lump sum at filing time. We calculate whether advance tax applies to you and prepare the instalment challans so you avoid interest for late payment.
Is there a surcharge for high-net-worth individuals?
Yes. Individuals with substantial net wealth can attract a surcharge on top of their income tax — for the 2025–26 tax year this generally starts once net assets cross roughly BDT 4 crore (with additional property/vehicle conditions), rising in slabs up to 35% for net wealth above BDT 50 crore. We assess this as part of preparing your wealth statement.
Do freelancers, consultants and gig workers need to file returns?
Yes. Income earned as a freelancer or consultant falls under "income from business or profession" and is taxed the same way as any other business income. If your total income crosses the tax-free threshold, or you hold a TIN for any reason, you're required to file — including for income received from overseas clients.
How are foreign income and non-resident taxpayers treated?
Bangladeshi residents are taxed on their worldwide income and must disclose foreign assets and bank accounts in their wealth statement. Non-resident individuals (other than non-resident Bangladeshis) are generally taxed at a flat rate on income sourced within Bangladesh. Double taxation relief may apply where Bangladesh has a treaty with the other country.
How do I verify or retrieve my TIN certificate?
You can check and download your e-TIN certificate anytime by logging into the NBR's e-Return portal with your registered mobile number and TIN. If you've lost access to your account or forgotten your TIN, we can help you recover it and re-link it correctly.
How does the investment tax rebate work?
Eligible investments — such as approved life insurance premiums, deposit pension schemes (DPS), government savings certificates (sanchayapatra), and listed shares or mutual funds — can earn you a rebate that directly reduces your tax. The rebate is generally 15% of your eligible investment, subject to a ceiling tied to your income. We optimise this so you claim the maximum you're legally entitled to.
What penalty applies if I file late or not at all?
Filing after the deadline can trigger a delay penalty and interest on any unpaid tax, and non-filing can lead to a best-judgment assessment plus a separate penalty imposed by the DCT. Beyond the money, missing your return means you lose your valid Proof of Submission of Return (PSR), which is now required for many everyday services. Filing on time — even a zero return — avoids all of this.
Corporate & company tax
What is the corporate tax rate for companies in Bangladesh?
For the 2025–26 tax year, non-listed (private limited) companies are generally taxed at 27.5%, while publicly listed companies pay 20% where IPO conditions are met. Banks, financial institutions, mobile operators and tobacco companies are taxed at higher sector-specific rates. Reduced rates require that all transactions run through banking channels, returns are filed on time, and audited accounts are maintained.
When must a company file its annual tax return?
Companies must file within the timeline set under the Income Tax Act 2023 based on their financial year-end, alongside audited financial statements and RJSC annual return compliance. Missing the deadline can mean losing reduced-rate eligibility and facing interest on unpaid tax.
How do I register a new company and get a trade licence?
Company formation runs through the RJSC — name clearance, drafting the memorandum and articles of association, and incorporation — followed by a trade licence from your local city corporation or municipality, a business TIN, and VAT (BIN) registration where applicable. We handle the full sequence and keep your annual RJSC and tax filings compliant afterward.
When does my business need to register for VAT?
A business generally must take VAT registration (a BIN) once its annual turnover crosses the registration threshold under the VAT & SD Act 2012, or immediately if it deals in goods or services that require registration regardless of turnover. Smaller businesses may fall under turnover tax instead. We assess which applies to you and complete the registration and monthly Mushak-9.1 filing.
NBR audits & notices
What is a tax audit in Bangladesh?
It is a review of your filed income tax return by the National Board of Revenue. The Deputy Commissioner of Taxes checks whether your declared income, deductions and assets match your bank statements, invoices and records. If something doesn't add up, the officer can raise a tax demand.
How long do I have to reply to an NBR audit notice?
Usually 30 days from the date on the notice; some hearing notices give 7–15 days. Always reply in writing before the deadline — asking for a time extension is a normal part of the process and is usually granted.
What happens if I ignore the notice?
The officer can pass a best-judgment assessment under the Income Tax Act 2023, estimating your income on his own — usually higher than reality — and adding interest and penalty. Reversing it later on appeal is harder and more expensive than replying on time.
Can I appeal a wrong assessment order?
Yes — first to the Commissioner of Taxes (Appeals), then to the Taxes Appellate Tribunal, and finally to the High Court Division. Each level has its own deadline, usually 45 days. Missing it closes the door.
Do you handle cases outside Dhaka?
Yes — every tax circle in Bangladesh, including Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barishal, Rangpur and Mymensingh. Most work is done online and by phone; we travel only when a hearing requires physical attendance.
Are you licensed to represent me before the tax authority?
Yes. Our founder is an NBR-licensed ITP with CA Course Completion from ICAB — legally allowed to represent taxpayers before the DCT, the Commissioner (Appeals) and the Taxes Appellate Tribunal. High Court matters are handled with Bar Council enrolled advocates.
Working with The Law Palace
How quickly can you start on my case?
Most reviews begin the same business day your documents arrive. Once you approve our fee quote and sign the authorisation, we typically file a straightforward individual return within 2–3 business days; audit replies and appeals depend on the document set and NBR's hearing schedule.
Can everything be done online, without visiting your office?
Yes. Most clients complete the entire process — document upload, review call, fee approval and e-filing — over phone, WhatsApp and email. You're welcome to visit our head office at Mohakhali C/A, or our Amtoli evening chamber, in person if you prefer, but it isn't required.
How much do your services cost?
Every case is quoted individually after a free review, based on its complexity and the documents involved. You'll get the exact figure in writing before any work begins — no hidden charges added later. Message us on WhatsApp with your situation for a fast, fair quote.
Is my financial information kept confidential?
Yes. Your documents and data are used only for your engagement and are never shared with third parties beyond what's legally required to file with NBR on your behalf.
